1. The basket begins with a large button glued to a piece of vinyl that will be marked for stitching placement. Florida long leaf pine needles, collected and processed by the instructor, are used to coil, or stitch together, the basket with waxed thread. The student will learn how to start and finish coiling, shaping, adding new thread, three types of stitches, adding beads, and wrapping the coil, while making their basket. Two color options of thread and several choices of beads and buttons will be available to choose from. The class will be broken into two 4-hour parts so that if you find yourself to be a slow coiler you will have time between classes to catch up.
Patty Feathers came to Florida from Kentucky 11 years ago and has been teaching basketry for 25 years, travelling throughout most of the eastern states and teaching at state workshops. Since moving to Florida, she stays close to home and enjoys teaching coiling with pine needles.
